1st Shooter is a site dedicated to the sometime controversial subject of First Person Shooters (FPS), and their place in today’s culture. We will take a close look at their effect on society, as well as how they’ve shaped the gaming and computer industries. We will start by defining this video game genre and its sub-genres. We will discuss in detail the surprisingly long history of this gaming genre and talk about its evolution from single player gaming to massive multiplayer online communities. These often brutal and violent games are not without their controversy, and we will try to bring an even handed approach to the arguments against them with counter-views of those criticisms. We will take a look at the various control systems used to play these games, as well as the developers and publishing houses who create them.
Violence in the media is an old and fervent topic with video games being the latest addition of subject matter. We offer only the facts as we know them, and while we are neither experts nor authorities on these ongoing issues, we do feel that they warrant attention. We welcome opinion and are open to discussion, so feel free to send us your thoughts and views on the content of our site.
What are First-person Shooters?
First-person shooter or FPS is a type or genre of action video game where the player sees everything from the point of view of the character. It essentially offers the gamer a first-person perspective. These games are also characterized by the use of handheld ranged weapons such as pistols, shotguns, rifles, machine guns and crossbows. The first-person perspective is often enhanced by adding the characters hand or hands, and the weapons that they are holding. Crosshairs are a mainstay of these points of view, aiding the players with aiming and observation. Most modern Shooters offer players the option to toggle from the first-person point of view, to that of a third-person point of view. The latter being a viewpoint positioned above or behind the character.
